Universal plan DVD Audio releases

Universal Music Group will release twenty albums on DVD-Audio before the end of the year, following EMI's SACD re-release of Pink Floyd's 'Dark Side Of The Moon'.

Following EMI's re-release of Pink Floyd's 'Dark Side Of The Moon' on new enhanced CD format SACD, Universal Music Group have confirmed they will release twenty albums on a rival new format, DVD-Audio, before the end of the year. It is likely the DVD-Audio releases will include new albums from best selling artists and remastered albums from their back catalogue. Larry Kenswil, President of Universal's technology division, told reporters: "Universal has always played a leading role in the development and implementation of new technologies and formats. Over the past five years DVD has established itself as one of the fastest growing formats. The huge penetration of DVD makes DVD-Audio a natural progression for music lovers who are already owners of DVD players, taking them from the familiar world of stereo to the 21st Century world of multi-channel surround sound." As far as we are aware DVD Audios can be played on most DVD players while SACDs require a new player, though those new players will play oldstyle CDs too.
