US DJ suspended

Don Imus has been suspended after referring to members of the Rutgers University women's basketball team in racist terms, though he has refused to resign.

US disc jockey Don Imus has been suspended for making racist comments on his morning talk show that appears via CBS Radio and MSNBC. Public protest led to a disciplinary action after he recently referred to mostly black members of the Rutgers University women's basketball team as "nappy-headed hos". Imus has already apologised several times, but has also said that he is not prepared to resign over the incident, despite US-wide calls for his sacking and a boycott of his sponsors.

The renowned shock jock said during his programme on Monday: "I'm not a bad person. I'm a good person who said something bad. Here's what I've learned: that you can't make fun of everybody, because some people don't deserve it." Appearing on a radio programme hosted civil rights activist the Reverend Al Sharpton, he admitted that the comments were "repugnant" and "repulsive", and added: "Our agenda is to try to be funny and sometimes we go too far, and sometimes we go way too far."
