Usage down

BayTSP data show Kazaa's simultaneous users fell to 2.27 million in December, while eDonkey led with 2.81 million users.

Good news, use of Kazaa is down. Bad news, all the Kazaa kids are switching to rival illegal P2P networks like eDonkey. According to US company BayTSP, who track these things, Kazaa only had

2.27 million simultaneous users in Dec, down from 3 million at the same point in 2003. However eDonkey maintained its healthy lead in P2P usage stakes, with 2.81 million users. It seems that attempts by the record labels and companies like Loudeye to swamp illegal P2P networks with spoof files does make services like Kazaa less attractive - however there is a strong argument that that forces P2P users to find alternative P2P networks rather than opting for the legitimate download platforms.
