Waters performs extracts from new opera

Roger Waters has performed extracts from his opera 'Ca Ira' in New York, a work about the French Revolution featuring Bryn Terfel, due on CD on 27 Sep.

Roger Waters has performed extracts from his brand new opera in New York. As previously reported, the former Pink Floyd bassist has spent 16 years off and on writing the operatic history of the French Revolution, 'Ca Ira', which features contributions from various classical music stars, including Welsh baritone Bryn Terfel. The three act opera is due to be released on CD on 27 Sep.

Waters said of the project "It's about change, and personal change; we each have within us the potential for republic," and told the US audience that 'Ca Ira' was "sort of reiterating 'The Wall'" with its themes of "powerlessness in the face of loss". He continued: "The point of music is for human beings to connect with one another," and added that he hoped that it would appeal to a new audience, not just opera-lovers. The opera will be performed in full in Rome later this year.
