Why you don't wear an NME t-shirt to a Darkness gig

Darkness frontman Justin Hawkins abused a 17-year-old fan he mistook for an NME journalist at a Los Angeles gig, later apologising and offering her merchandise.

Embarrassment all round at an LA Darkness gig after Justin Hawkins told an audience member who he heard 'was from the NME' to "fuck off, I don't want you in here". NME journalists should be prepared for Hawkins' distain towards them of course, but 17 year old Sarah Harnett didn't work for the NME, she had simply won tickets to see the gig via the magazine.

Fortunately an audience member shouted back: "She's not from the NME, she won it through the NME".

To which Hawkins quickly responded: "Oh crap, I'm sorry, I just didn't know, we've had some trouble with the NME and stuff'.

A spokesman for the band told reporters after the gig: "Justin was very sorry for his outburst. When he realised she was a fan he searched for her and apologised and offered her some free merchandise. It wasn't as bad as first thought".
