Yahoo! to open up music site to rivals

Yahoo! will let its music site carry information about songs and artists sold by rival download services such as iTunes and Amazon, as part of a wider plan to host other content providers.

Yahoo! has said it will open up its music site so to carry information about songs and artists carried by rival download providers like iTunes and Amazon. The move is part of a Yahoo-wide plan to allow other content owners and digital service providers to reach consumers via the Yahoo! platform, presumably in a bid to transform the Yahoo! network into a one-stop destination, which in turn would presumably help it maximise advertising revenues. The danger, of course, is that those other web providers use their exposure on the Yahoo! website to drive consumers towards their own one-stop destination sites, in much the same way web users who first stumbled across the Google search facility on Yahoo! then migrated to Google's own website. Yahoo!, presumably, are confident that won't happen this time.
