Formed in Boston’s DIY basement scene during their time at Berklee, Brooklyn-based indie rock trio Trophy Wife cut through the noise but never harshly, riding atop the fuzz like a thread of warmth through static.
At the centre is McKenzie Iazzetta, whose vocals recall early Gwen Stefani, both vulnerable and commanding. Christian Pace on bass and Michael Martelli on drums complete the trio, blending country twang with 90s grunge.
Wrapped in warm, distorted haze, new single ‘So Hard’ is a negotiation with desire itself, asking “What am I willing to give up in order to get what I want?” Heavy riffs and fuzzed-out melodies frame Iazzetta’s striking voice, with the guitars and drums responding with bruising honesty.
As Iazzetta puts it, “‘So Hard’ is about wishing things could be as simple as they are in your head and the bargaining you’re willing to do to get what you want. Is all the compromise worth the crumb of the fantasy you’re left with?”
