This year’s Great Escape showcase festival and music conference is getting ever closer, with 3500 music industry people set to arrive in Brighton next month for four days of learning, debating, networking and talent spotting. At the heart of the TGE Conference programme are the three full-day CMU+TGE conferences.

The second of those, on Thursday 9 May, brings together all the work CMU Insights has done with the UK Music Managers Forum over the last five years on dissecting the digital dollar, providing a concise and user-friendly guide to how the streaming business actually works from a rights and royalties perspective. Over the day, the mechanics will be explained, the latest trends explored and the key talking points debated.

Along the way, MMF will launch the latest of its Digital Dollar guides, produced by CMU Insights. This explains the incredibly complicated way that streaming services license song rights, and the impact this has on the way songwriters are then paid. Or not, as the case may be. With each individual songwriter’s streaming income flowing down a plethora a ‘royalty chains’, there are a whole assortment of stages in the process where money can get held up or lost. All will be explained at the Digital Dollars Conference.

The day will then wrap up with another of the keynote in conversations CMU is presenting this year. CMU’s Chris Cooke will talk to Justin Kalifowitz, Founder and CEO of Downtown Music. The leading independent music publisher also owns Songtrust, one of the companies trying to tackle the issues around how songwriters get paid. It also recently acquired CD Baby and its sister digital companies, and during the conversation Kalifowitz will discuss what it takes for a music rights company to fully support and nurture each individual artist and songwriter business in the streaming age.

The CMU+TGE Digital Dollars Conference takes place at the new home of the TGE Conference, Jurys Inn Waterfront, on Thursday 9 May. It is open to all TGE delegates – click here to buy a delegate pass.
