LadBaby gets third Christmas number one, Pogues top Christmas song chart

LadBaby officially scored the Christmas number one hat-trick yesterday with the YouTuber’s latest sausage roll themed charity record topping the UK chart.

Having got off to a strong lead at the start of the chart week, LadBaby managed to stay ahead beating some Christmas songs old and new, and late contender ‘Boris Johnson Is A Fucking Cunt’ by The Kunts.

Behind LadBaby’s ‘Don’t Stop Me Eatin’ were Mariah Carey’s ‘All I Want For Christmas Is You’, Wham’s ‘Last Christmas’ and Jess Glynne’s ‘This Christmas’, in that order.

The Kunts enjoyed a late surge thanks to some social media support, but only enough of a surge to enter the Christmas chart at number five.

Told he’d secured his third consecutive Christmas number one by the Official Charts Company, LadBaby – aka Mark Hoyle – commented: “From the bottom of our hearts, we just want to say thank you again to everybody. We can’t believe that, a third year on, we’ve had so much support yet again”.

The single was raising money for food bank charity The Trussell Trust. Hoyle went on: “We’re trying to raise money for an amazing cause, so thank you. Merry Christmas to everyone and don’t stop believin – that things are going to get better. 2021 is going to be better for everyone”.

Although Carey’s ‘All I Want For Christmas Is You’ finally got to number one in the UK singles chart earlier this month, 26 years after its release, on Christmas Day itself it was in second place, just like in 1994. Back then it lost out to East 17’s ‘Stay Another Day’.

Carey was also in second place in a special Christmas song chart counted down on Radio 2 yesterday. Based on data from UK collecting society PPL, that programme featured the 40 festive tunes most played in the UK since the year 2000.

Carey was also one place ahead of Wham’s ‘Last Christmas’ in that chart too, but lost out on the number one spot to The Pogues’ ‘Fairytale Of New York’.

But at least she beat East 17 this time, with ‘Stay Another Day’ at number thirteen. Then again, that’s not really a Christmas song, is it? So maybe beating that in a Christmas songs list isn’t so big an achievement.

But still, in the spirit of the season, well done Carey, well done LadBaby, well done Kunts, well done everyone!
