Asda appoint E-UK for entertainment supplies

Asda has agreed to have Woolworths' distribution company E-UK supply all its CDs, DVDs and games, a deal worth about £200 million a year.

Those Associated Dairies (that's Asda, for those with poor knowledge of supermarket histories) have announced that they have entered into a deal with Woolworths' distribution company Entertainment UK for the supply of all their CDs, DVDs and video games, which is great news for E-UK, given Asda's not insignificant market share in the consumer entertainment market (except for CD singles, of course, which Asda have said they will no longer sell) - in fact, E-UK say the deal should add about £200 million to their annual turnover.

The new deal follows news last week that Asda was terminating its distribution contract with Handleman UK because the two parties couldn't reach "mutually beneficial terms". Welcoming the new deal, Woolies boss Trevor Bish-Jones told reporters: "We are delighted to have won the Asda business. It marks another important step in the development of E-UK. Over the past 18 months, through a series of contract wins and acquisitions, we have significantly improved the underlying quality of the E-UK business".
