Borders plans to sell UK and Ireland stores

US retailer Borders is looking to sell its UK and Ireland business of 72 stores, with Merrill Lynch assisting and UK CEO David Roche saying business continues as usual.

Ah, this is a shame, I hope whoever buys them doesn't alter things too much. US books and entertainment retailer Borders has said it is looking to sell its UK and Ireland business of 72 stores (the Borders and Books etc stores), which is a shame, I like Borders. The book chain, which also sells music in about 35 of its UK stores, has been doing OK given competitors like HMV/Waterstones have been really struggling, but the retail giant says it wants to concentrate on its US business. No word yet on who might be interested in buying the UK chain, or what that would mean for the stores or their 2000 staff, though the CEO of the UK division, David Roche, said on Friday: "Until such time as a buyer is found it is very much business as usual". If anyone out there in CMU land fancies buying a book and music retail company (anyone?), I'd give Merrill Lynch a call, they're assisting on the sale.
