CMU is presenting sessions at a number of conferences in the next few weeks, visiting Vill Vill Vest in Bergen, Output in Belfast and Most Wanted: Music in Berlin. CMU’s Pathways Into Music Foundation is also presenting the Music Industry + Music Education Conference with Un-Convention in Manchester.
In Bergen, there’ll be sessions on fanbase building and sync; in Belfast, evolving record deals and supporting new talent; and in Berlin, the music industry’s collecting societies and the diversifying digital market. The MIME Conference will bring together music educators and the music industry to discuss the best ways to support future music talent, both on stage and behind the scenes.
CMU at Vill Vill Vest in Bergen
At Vill Vill Vest in Bergen, Norway this Friday, 8 Nov, CMU’s Chris Cooke will run through all the platforms artists and their teams can now use to grow, engage and monetise a fanbase. He'll then be joined by Travis Yuxuan Li from Soundar Entertainment and Róisín Warner from Blackstar Agency to discuss the role different platforms play, and how busy artists on a budget can decide what to prioritise.
Later the same day, CMU will put the spotlight on the sync market. We’ll run through the mechanics of the sync business and talk through the latest market trends with Gemma Farrington from Sentric, before asking music supervisors Jumi Akinfenwa and Sam Emery for practical tips on how artists, managers, labels and publishers can build a sync network and secure sync deals.
CMU at Output in Belfast
At Output in Belfast on Tuesday 12 Nov, CMU will present a speed briefing on evolving record deals and the options now available to artists when choosing a business partner to work with on their recordings. We’ll then talk through those options - and the pros and cons of different approaches - with lawyer Willie Ryan, manager Liam Craig, and Aine Cronin-McCartney from Faction Music and Bloom Records.
Also at Output, CMU’s Pathways Into Music Foundation will present its latest research identifying what knowledge and information young people need to pursue a career in music, and the resources that are available. The session will also consider the role of music educators, talent development programmes and youth organisations in providing that kind of career support.
CMU at Most Wanted: Music in Berlin
The following day, Wednesday 13 Nov, CMU will present two sessions at Most Wanted: Music in Berlin. First, Chris Cooke will moderate a panel on the role of the music industry’s collecting societies. With representatives from GEMA, BUMA, SUISA and Unison, it will also consider how collective licensing works on a global basis, the different approaches, and how societies both collaborate and compete.
Later in the day, CMU will also present another speed briefing, this time on the diversifying digital market. The digital music landscape is constantly evolving, with new apps, platforms and experiences creating new opportunities and opening up new revenue streams. This speed briefing will tell delegates everything they need to know about capitalising on these new opportunities.
MIME Conference in Manchester
Finally, on Saturday 23 Nov, CMU’s Pathways Into Music Foundation is teaming up with Un-Convention to present the Music Industry + Music Education Conference in Manchester.
The day is aimed at anyone working in music education and talent development, and everyone in the music industry interested in how we support the next generation of music-makers, music executives and music entrepreneurs.
It will look at what young people need to know in order to pursue a career in music; how we can teach entrepreneurialism; what career resources and music courses are available; how industry and academia can better support each other; and innovation in music education and talent development.
