Doherty back in court

Pete Doherty returns to Thames Magistrates' Court to be sentenced for drug possession, and is named the least worthy icon in Arena's anti-icon poll.

Pete Doherty is due back at Thames Magistrates' Court today to be sentenced on seven counts of drug possession and will also face another review of that much reported community order. The singer, as previously reported, pleaded guilty to possessing class A and class C drugs.

Elsewhere in Doherty news, the singer has been deemed the least worthy icon in Arena's 2006 'anti-icon' poll. The magazine's editor William Drew explained: "We asked our readers to pick those people who have consumed the headlines and defined the last year for all the wrong reasons. Pete Doherty was voted the anti-icon of the year with 38% of the vote thanks to his drug habit which has popularised junkie chic and earned him an almost cult following. This comes despite overwhelmingly mediocre music and less than inspiring live performances."

Hearteningly, ubiquitous TV irritant Russell Brand came second in the poll. Considerably less heartening is the news, just in, that Brand is to host the 2007 Brit Awards. Why, oh, why must people keep giving him work?
