Elton John criticises Australian prime minister

Elton John has criticised Australian prime minister John Howard over his opposition to gay civil unions, responding to a question about a message for the PM with a rude retort.

Elton John has publicly criticised Australian prime minister John Howard's stance on the issue of gay marriage. The singer is, of course, currently on a tour of the country, and asked if he had a message for the PM, whose government ruled against allowing gay civil unions back in June, Elton responded with the words "up yours!"

The singer has, of course, made a formal commitment to his partner, David Furnish, and continues to advocate gay rights, making controversial comments earlier this month in an interview with the Observer Music Monthly, calling for organised religion to be banned, and accusing it of trying to "turn hatred towards gay people". He added he would continue to fight for gay rights, "whether I do it silently behind the scenes or so vocally that I get locked up".
