George Martin gets honorary doctorate

Beatles producer George Martin has received an honorary doctorate in music from Leeds Metropolitan University, following his induction into the UK Music Hall of Fame.

Beatles producer George Martin has been given an honorary doctorate in music by Leeds Metropolitan University for his services to the music world. The new honour follows his recent induction to the UK Music Hall of Fame. Most of the news reports on this, I notice, are saying he was known as the 'fifth Beatle'. So I'm going to bring this up now whilst it's on my mind. I wish people wouldn't always be referring to people as the 'fifth Beatle', because there are loads of people who regularly get called that, and it's very confusing. Stuart Sutcliffe, Pete Best, Billy Preston, Brian Epstein. Hang on, I've just looked this up on Wikipedia, and there's a whole topic devoted to who the 'fifth Beatle' is, and whoever wrote it thought up a lot more potential candidates than I did. Check it out.
