Green Day dominate at VMAs

Green Day won seven of the eight awards they were nominated for at the MTV Video Music Awards, while Suge Knight was shot in the leg at a pre-awards party in Miami.

Green Day dominated at this weekend's MTV Video Music Awards, winning seven of the eight gongs they were nominated for. They took the awards for Best Rock Video and Best Video for 'Boulevard Of Broken Dreams', as well as Best Group, the Viewers' Choice Award and several technical awards. The only award the band were shortlisted for but didn't win was the one for Art Direction, which went to the team behind Gwen Stefani's 'What You Waiting For?' video. After his hugely successful night, Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong told reporters: "It's great to know that rock music still has a place at MTV".

Other winners on the night included Kanye West who took Best Male Video, Kelly Clarkson who won Best Female Video, Ludacris who took Best Rap Video, Alicia Keys who won Best R&B Video and Missy Elliot who won both Best Hip Hop Video and Best Dance Video.

The awards went ahead despite concerns about Hurricane Katrina, which hit Florida last week, and which forced some of the pre-award parties in host town Miami to be cancelled. Though risky weather conditions didn't provide the only drama around the awards event. Hip hop mogul Suge Knight was shot in the upper right leg during a pre-awards party at a Miami nightclub on Saturday night. Regarding that shooting, local police say they have no suspects as yet but investigations continue.
