Blur (and not rioting) brought the north of England's biggest rock event, the Leeds Festival, to a close on Sunday night, and everyone seemed happy that the new site and extra security put in place by Mean Fiddler meant it was the line up – including great sets from Metallica, System Of A Down, Linkin Park, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and The Darkness – that dominated the news agenda.
Festival organiser Melvin Benn told the BBC: "I'm standing by the side of the main stage, watching the big wheel in the distance and Blur have just finished to a packed house. I really couldn't be happier. There has been a real sense of how everyone really was just pleased it was going ahead and really enjoyed themselves."
Despite a little drama when 22 people got hurt as the audience pushed forward at the start of the System Of A Down set on Friday much of the rest of the weekend passed without incident - even predictions from the parish council in nearby Thorner that the local village would be gridlocked by traffic proved unfounded.
A similar story down at Reading where a good weekend was had by all. The death of one festival-goer on one of the campsites brought much upset, though police have confirmed the tragic event was not suspicious. Local police chief John Relph told reporters: "The festival has run smoothly this year with a small number of minor public disorder and violence incidents, which is expected with a crowd of more than 60,000 people on one site."
Look out for CMU's Reading review tomorrow.
