Manchester to open music archive museum

The Manchester District Music Archive will launch with a seminar at the Urbis Museum on 21 September, featuring Elbow's Guy Garvey and writer Jon Savage.

The city of Manchester is to have a museum devoted to documenting its rich musical history which, of course, includes the likes of Joy Division, The Smiths, The Stone Roses and Oasis.

The Manchester District Music Archive will be launched with a special seminar at the Urbis Museum on 21 Sep at 5.30pm. Hosted by Mark Radcliffe, the session will include presentations from Elbow's Guy Garvey, writer Jon Savage, cultural commentator CP Lee and Jan Hargreaves from the Museum of Science And Industry.

The seminar will give members of the public an opportunity to have their say in the development of the museum. Alison Surtees of MDM Archive says: "If you've been there, seen a gig, danced 'til you've dropped, made a record, sold a record, produced a record, hosted a jig, DJed, caught a drumstick, made a flyer, saved a flyer, busked, written a song or just snogged in a dark corner of a club, you're in. Let's do our music justice."
