Rock veterans get birthday honours

Jimmy Page, Brian May, John Mayall and Midge Ure are among the rock figures on the Queen's birthday honours list, alongside Jonathon Ross and Terry Wogan.

Rock veterans Jimmy Page, Brian May, John Mayall and Midge Ure are amongst those on the Queen's annual birthday honours list. Founding Led Zeppelin member Page receives an OBE, alongside father-of-british-blues Mayall, and Midge Ure who both get the same honour. Queen guitarist May gets a CBE. Broadcasters Jonathon Ross and Terry Wogan were also honoured, with an OBE and a knighthood respectively, whilst elsewhere in the music world, opera singer John Tomlinson gets a knighthood.

Other luminaries making the list this year include actor David Jason, Britain's chief rabbi Jonathan Sacks, Working Title Films co-chairmen Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner, novelist William Boyd, footballer Les Ferdinand and Dame Judi Dench, who gets a step up from being 'just a dame' and is now a companion of honour - one of a select group limited to 65 persons at any one time. Also honoured was Sylvia Young, founder of the Sylvia Young Theatre School, responsible for the (ahem) artistic development of such popstrels as Emma Bunton, Billie Piper, and Matt from Busted. So there you go.
