The second annual 'Black Girls Rock! awards are set to take place on 6 Oct with presenters including Ashanti, Prince support act Mya, the chart-topping Rihanna and MC Lyte. The US event, which celebrates - if you hadn't guessed - black women in music, was founded by DJ Beverly Bond, who spoke about the importance of the awards: "We are proud and humbled to have such strong, beautiful and powerful women involved with this event. In light of the media's constant negative depiction of black women it is so very important that Black Girls Rock! takes time to shine a much needed light on our heroes". Artists already tipped for awards include Missy Elliott for the Creative Visionary Award and Common for the Soul Brother Number 1 Award. Though he's not a girl.
