Cross-sector trade group UK Music has launched a new guide to boosting diversity and inclusion across the music industry, organising the activities music companies and organisations should undertake into five areas: people, policy, partnerships, purchase and progress.
Building on a previous ten point plan published by the trade group, the new ‘five Ps’ guide focuses on five areas that UK Music’s Diversity Taskforce say they have identified as being “crucial in delivering significant outcomes and enduring change”.
The guide, they add, provides “clear actions that could be taken by UK Music members and the wider industry to improve diversity and inclusion across the entire music ecosystem”.
Diversity Taskforce Chair Ammo Talwar adds, “The Five Ps is a practical, powerful model designed to help music companies move beyond pledges and embed inclusion into every part of their organisation. It is not about ticking boxes, it is about rewriting the rules”.
Tasks under ‘people’ include fair hiring processes and fostering an inclusive environment, while ‘policy’ involves developing “a vision that will sustain long-term diversity goals”, and ‘progress’ requires charting the progress made in delivering on those goals.
‘Partnerships’ and ‘Purchase’ is about how music companies interact with other organisations, both in terms of sharing skills and experience with counterparts across the industry, and asking whether the way a company “obtains goods or services could better encourage diversity”.
Also commenting on the new guide, Diversity Taskforce Vice-Chair Paulette Long says: “The Five Ps empowers organisations of every kind with the tools they need to break down barriers that prevent diverse talent from flourishing”.
“By continually embracing the five principles of people, policy, partnerships, purchase and progress”, she adds, “organisations can drive meaningful change, laying the foundations for a more inclusive industry for generations to come”.
