Woolworths takeover likely as Apax Partners eye bid

A bidding war for Woolworths may begin after private equity firm Apax Partners said it was interested in buying the group, with supermarkets possibly bidding too.

Up for some retail takeover news? Of course you are. A bidding war is likely to begin anytime now for Woolworths who are, don't forget, one of the biggest forces in music retail in the UK given the dominance of their own stores, their MVC chain and the fact that their EUK division supplies Tesco and WH Smith.

Private equity types Apax Partners have announced that they are interested in buying the firm, which has led to gossip that a number of other key players, including one or more of the supermarkets, might make rival bids, which would be fun. The consensus is any private equity buyer would look to break the group up and sell them off as separate businesses.
