YouTube Led Zepp clips taken down by infringement agency, not Warner

Digital rights agency GrayZone says it wrongly issued takedown notices for Led Zeppelin concert clips on YouTube, acting without Warner or the band's authorisation.

So, the official line on the previously reported removal of phone-filmed clips of last week's Led Zeppelin reunion concert off YouTube is that a digital infringement monitoring agency hired by Warner Music got ahead of themselves.

As previously reported, clips of the Led Zepp reunion posted on the video sharing site last week were quickly taken down by the YouTube infringement police. When challenged about it, YouTube bosses said that they were acting on the orders of Warner Music who own the Led Zepp catalogue. Some, meanwhile, noting that Warner normally allow their music to be posted on YouTube (because they have a royalty agreement in place with the site), speculated that it was actually the band themselves that had ordered the clips be removed. The disappearance of the clips garnered some criticism among Led Zepp's fanbase, and may have led to one daily music news bulletin or another - I can't remember which one - mocking Warner for their over reaction.

Well, the official line is that neither Warner nor the band themselves did, in fact, over-react. Rather, digital rights protection agency GrayZone, who are hired by Warner to monitor the appearance of music from the major's catalogue online, acted without the label or band's consent. A statement from the agency issued late last week and quoted by Digital Music News reads thus: "Grayzone regrets that it erroneously issued takedown notices to YouTube regarding footage of Led Zeppelin's December 10th concert. We acted without authorisation from the band or Warner Music Group". So that's that then.
