Atlanta guitarist Eddie 9V picked up the instrument at six and spent years in metal and indie bands before the blues got him. He stumbled across Howlin Wolf’s 1966 Newport Folk Festival performance - “something just exploded in me when I saw that clip”, he says.

That was that. He’s been road-testing his Southern soul, blues and rock and roll ever since. Now five albums in, he’s built the kind of reputation that tends to attract serious collaborators.

New album ‘Down Here’ was produced by Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys at his Nashville studio, with writing sessions alongside Marcus King and veteran Nashville songwriters.

New single ‘Blowin Up’ is the first taste, country-fried funk, greasy slide guitar and a kind of loose, off-the-cuff charm. It’s about finally breaking through, punctuated with actual explosions, “it’s my favourite song on the album”, he says, “it’s got such a good groove”. Hard to argue.

‘Down Here’ is out soon. He tours with The Black Keys from July.
