Atlanta guitarist Eddie 9V picked up the instrument at six and spent years in metal and indie bands before the blues got him. He stumbled across Howlin Wolfâs 1966 Newport Folk Festival performance - âsomething just exploded in me when I saw that clipâ, he says.
That was that. Heâs been road-testing his Southern soul, blues and rock and roll ever since. Now five albums in, heâs built the kind of reputation that tends to attract serious collaborators.
New album âDown Hereâ was produced by Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys at his Nashville studio, with writing sessions alongside Marcus King and veteran Nashville songwriters.
New single âBlowin Upâ is the first taste, country-fried funk, greasy slide guitar and a kind of loose, off-the-cuff charm. Itâs about finally breaking through, punctuated with actual explosions, âitâs my favourite song on the albumâ, he says, âitâs got such a good grooveâ. Hard to argue.
âDown Hereâ is out soon. He tours with The Black Keys from July.
