Sabam win Universal licence

Belgian collecting society Sabam will control Universal Music's mechanical licensing across Europe, a job previously handled by London-based MCPS.

Much movement in the very wild world of royalty collection yesterday. Belgian based collection society Sabam confirmed it had done a deal with Universal Music which means they will control the major's mechanical licensing for the whole of Europe - a job until now done by London based collections society MCPS. No idea what that means, except that Sabam's annual turnover is likely to double as a result of the deal, and everyone seems to think it's very bad news for poor old MCPS.
