Liverpool trio DBA! were born in a basement, their DIY demo studio tucked into the drain of a Merseyside nightclub, and it shows in the best possible way.

Eels, Pavement, The Breeders, Elastica, Beck: those are the reference points, which is a pretty solid shorthand for noisy, melodic, slightly scuffed indie rock with something to say.

New single ‘Little Rivers’ isn’t trying to reinvent anything, it’s just a very good rock song. Blown-out, almost twangy vocals sit over a slow build that feels almost like an intermission, unhurried, letting the tension accumulate before the track opens up into a proper crescendo. It works.

“It’s a confessional ode to the politics of being in a band”, says frontman Sam Warren, “and a bittersweet lament to the bands no longer with us”.

Their new EP ‘I Was Born, I Was Dead’ is out this Friday. Get ahead of it!
